Getting Started with Scannable NFC Tags

Scannable NFC Tags work with all NFC-enabled mobile phones.

This Getting Started guide will help you get set up, and scan like a pro.

Three important tips before you begin.
Step 01
Find the location of your phone’s antenna, or NFC “sweet spot”
This makes reading our tags just that little bit easier - especially the small ones. Check out this blog if you need a little help finding your phone’s sweet spot.
Step 02
Metal equipment needs
on-metal tags
If attaching a tag to metal, make sure you use our on-metal tags, or another tag designed to be placed on metal. You'll have a hard time getting your phone to read a tag that’s not designed to be placed on metal.
Step 03
Cleaning your gear helps the tags to stick
We recommend you clean the surface you are sticking your tags onto so that it is free of oil, grease, dirt, or other substances that will weaken the adhesive bond.
Step 01

Download the App

Download our free app from the App Store or Google Play and sign up for an account so that you can start adding equipment to your inventory.

Step 02

Search for the item you want to add

Start by tapping the Scannable logo to search for your item.

Use the search tab to search by name or part number, or try scanning the packaging barcode.

Step 03

Add the item to your inventory

Add the item’s serial number, batch number, date of manufacture, and date of first use, and select ‘Add to Inventory’.

If there is a QR or data matrix code etched on your item, try using the camera to capture the item’s serial number.

Step 04

Link the NFC tag to your item

Select “Options”, then “Add NFC”. Hold the NFC tag against your phone’s NFC Sweet Spot, and give it a few moments to read.

Step 05

You’re all set!

Your item is now phone-scannable!From here, just hit the Scannable logo, select ‘Scan NFC’ to launch the scanner, and hold your phone against the NFC tag to manage your item.

Hardware

Designed for use on fibre ropes, this label has a high-tack adhesive and takes ballpoint pen ink well. Pair with our 35mm lengths of heat shrink for the most robust solution (sold separately). There are Individually cut labels available in a 50-pack as well as a reel, which is suitable for printing.

Use it on:

  • Ropes with a minimum diameter of 5.5mm
  • Plastic surfaces
Everything else

The Under-Label tag is a great solution for popping on a Petzl harness ID card or under a traditional rope label. It is a self-adhesive solution which can be used by itself, but it also pairs nicely with our cut lengths of heat-shrink.

Use it on:

  • Plastic harness ID cards
  • Under rope labels

This tag is not suitable for use on metal surfaces.

Harnesses

40mm cut lengths of adhesive-lined heat shrink to make life easy.

Use it on:

  • Our ‘Squircle’ on-metal tags on round bar carabiners
  • Over rope labels
  • Any item with a diameter smaller than 15mm.

Heat shrink should be applied using a heat gun or similar—A lighter doesn’t provide enough heat to activate the adhesive or shrink the plastic sufficiently.

Everything else

This tag is a high-tack self-adhesive option for use on metal equipment.

Use it on:

  • Metal devices
  • Round bar carabiners (with the addition of our pre-cut lengths of adhesive-lined heat shrink—sold separately).
  • Other non-metal equipment
Everything else

The Under-Label tag is a great solution for popping on a Petzl harness ID card or under a traditional rope label. It is a self-adhesive solution which can be used by itself, but it also pairs nicely with our cut lengths of heat-shrink.

Use it on:

  • Plastic harness ID cards
  • Under rope labels

This tag is not suitable for use on metal surfaces.

Everything else

The Jack of all Tags is purely that! A very robust and versatile tag.

Use it on:

  • Round slings—it won't constrict the yarns and impact their ability to hold a load
  • It's really handy for placing on anchors
  • It can also be used on harnesses
  • Any other hard-to-tag item

Save your fingers! We recommend using pliers to attach the JOAT.

Helmets

The Zip Tie NFC tag is incredibly versatile, as we all know zip ties are! it can be used on any item where the use of a cable tie does not inhibit mechanical movement. It has a maximum diameter of 5cm.

Use it on:

  • Harnesses and gear loops
  • Kit bags
  • Anywhere!

Using this tag on round slings and other textiles needs to be carefully considered, so as not to constrict the yarns and impact their ability to hold a load.

Harnesses

This tag is designed to be used on plastic helmets, where only certain adhesives are approved. Our stickers use Petzl-approved adhesive.

Use it on:

  • Helmets
  • Other plastic surfaces

This tag is not suitable for use on metal surfaces.

Slings and Lanyards

This is our USB NFC Reader. It works as a keyboard, typing the NFC identifier or serial number that is linked to your NFC tag into any application on your Mac or PC, without typing a thing. The USB NFC Reader makes inspecting equipment or checking it in and out an absolute breeze!Just plug the USB NFC Reader into a USB-A port on your computer and hold the NFC tag against the middle of the reader to automatically enter the NFC identifier or serial number into your software of choice.
